Each year, the Alma G. Logsdon Scholarship is granted to undergraduate students enrolled full-time at Allegany College of Maryland who are residents of Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia or the District of Columbia. In order to receive the non-renewable $1,000 scholarship, applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and provide an essay within the application packet. Although it is not required of all candidates, preference will be given to students majoring in education.

2. Crowell & Moring Diversity in the Legal Profession Scholarship

Deadline: December 15th

Crowell & Moring LLP law firm in Washington, D.C. has created a scholarship program as part of the firm’s 25th anniversary celebration to promote increased diversity within the legal profession and foster legal talent in underrepresented populations. On an annual basis, the firm provides three separate awards, one for $10,000 and two for $7,500, to students who have overcome ethnic or racial obstacles to pursue a J.D. degree. 3. D.C. Adoption Scholarship (DCAS)

Deadline: June 30th

The District of Columbia Higher Education Financial Services offers the D.C. Adoption Scholarship (DCAS) to children who have been adopted through D.C. Child and Family Services Agency and/or children who have lost one or both parents in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The scholarship is valued at up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of six years or a lifetime maximum amount of $50,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have lived in the District of Columbia for a minimum of 12 months, and be enrolled with good academic standing in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program.

4. D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAG)

First created by Congress in 1999 through the District of Columbia College Access Act, the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program (DCTAG) is offered to college-bound residents with citizenship status within the District of Columbia. In order to receive a grant up to $10,000 to attend any public or private four-year university in the nation, applicants must be high school graduates, under the age of 25 years old, accepted for enrollment in a first-time degree at least on a part-time basis, and not be in default on any federal student loans.

5. Dottie Thomas Library Scholarship

Deadline: May 15th

Alleghany College of Maryland also offers the Dottie Thomas Library Scholarship to undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at the school full-time who are permanent residents of Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, or the District of Columbia. In order to receive the one-time scholarship for $500, candidates must exceed all minimum entrance academic performance standards, maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, and be actively pursuing a degree in a field related to library science or elementary education.

6. Ernestine Matthews Trust Scholarship Award

Funded by an educational trust of Ernestine Matthews, this scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, or Pennsylvania who wish to further their education in college. 7. Family Matters Scholarship

Each year, the University of the District of Columbia offers the Family Matters Scholarship to undergraduate students enrolled full-time who have siblings that are attending UDC in an undergraduate or graduate program concurrently. 13. Junior Achievement of Greater Washington Essay Competition

Junior Achievement of Greater Washington hosts an Essay Competition each year for students in their freshmen, sophomore, junior, or senior year of high school within the Washington, DC metropolitan area. With more than $100,000 in scholarships up for grabs in the competition, students are required to write a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay on an assigned topic related to business or entrepreneurship. 16. Legacy of Life Essay Contest

Endowed by the Leslie Ebert Memorial Fund from the Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC), the Legacy of Life Essay Contest is open to all high school seniors within the District of Columbia, Virginia, or Maryland who intend to enter college following graduation. 17. MD and DC Credit Union College Scholarship

The Credit Union Foundation of Maryland and the District of Columbia supports a college program that provides college-bound members with the opportunity to apply for one of ten $1,000 essay-based scholarships, one $1,000 video-based scholarship, and one $1,000 photo-based scholarship.
