Ever since its inception in 1994 as a single college student’s digital presence on the Web, the concept of the personal blog has shaped and defined the online experiences of millions of people worldwide. Today, corporations and government agencies maintain blogs: as with other forms of interactive social media, they are a virtual requirement for doing business online, and are seen as a valuable way to engage with an organization’s client base (or other constituency). It isn’t just big corporations that use blogs, however: individual offices and departments frequently maintain their own. One of the most common is the human resources blog. HR blogs thrive on engaging and valuable content, which encourages people to follow company policy, report problems appropriately, and to engage with HR personnel as valuable partners (instead of seeing them as simply being managerial or executive cohorts).

Here are five of the most entertaining HR blogs to be read online today, in terms of offering equal parts enthusiastic engagement and valuable human resources content:

HR Hero

HR Hero  is a website dedicated to human resources and employment law, from the perspective of a career human resources professional. The HR Hero blog “EntertainHR” covers the world of entertainment, with specific attention being paid to how the entertainment world affects human resources concerns. A series of regular authors and guest bloggers helps to keep the content fresh, interesting and varied, without detracting from the blog’s overall message.

HR Ringleader

The HR Ringleader  is run by Trisha McFarlane, one of the HR Examiner’s top 100 influential people in human resources today. Trisha’s prolific social media use demonstrates a sound grasp of both traditional and digital organization and networking skills. Her approach is frequently described as being based on a combination of smooth finesse with unquestioned professionalism, and her blog describes techniques for keeping human resources content fresh and interesting.

Monster Thinking

Another one of HR Examiner’s top 100 influencers, Eric Winegardner is Monster.com’s Vice President of Client Adoption. Eric is Monster’s public recruiting face, and is known for sharing his expansive HR knowledge base at conferences across the United States and abroad.  Monster Thinking  stands out from many of the other popular human resources blogs in that it isn’t solely, or even primarily is personal soapbox: Eric Winegardner features regular postings from authors in all walks of life, and at every level of the HR industry. More than one fellow professional has described Winegardner’s blog as being “a pile” of actionable data and profound insight.

True Faith HR

Dr. Matthew Stollak’s blog,  True Faith HR  conveys a sense of enthusiasm and high-energy which Professor Stollak also imparts to his students. He teaches at the award-winning St. Norbert College human resources program, through which he focuses on combining the financial side of human capital management with the friendly and open demeanor that he believes is critical to a well-managed HR department.

HR Capitalist

Kris Dunn runs  The HR Capitalist  one of the highest rated human resource blogs in existence today. Kris’ frequently irreverent and outside-the-box style is no less insightful for its somewhat unorthodox approach to human resources, with the blog’s avowed goal being to pull HR out of the analog age. Kris wants to see human resources take advantage of today’s social trends and technological innovation, and his blog is focused on that goal.

Through the creation and maintenance of a human resources blog, a company engages constructively with their own employees. It is also a valuable way to network with other HR professionals and associates, sharing information about human resources strategy from a “what works, and what doesn’t” standpoint.
